Proposition 64

Prop 64: What does this mean for UCSB students?

In 2016, California voted to legalize recreational marijuana for adults 21 and over. This law went into affect on November 9th, 2016 and means that adults 21 and over can possess up to an ounce of marijuana. Despite the passage of the bill, it is still prohibited at the University of California. Here is a breakdown of what you can and cannot do under this law.

What you can do off of campus property if you are 21:

You can be in possession of up to one ounce of marijuana or 8 grams of concentrate (wax).

You can smoke or consume marijuana in a private residence.

You can grow up to 6 plants on your property.

You can give (but not sell) marijuana to another personwho is 21 and over.

What you CANNOT do:

You cannot possess or consume marijuana on any UC property, including UCSB-owned residence halls and apartments. This is because UCs receive federal money and therefore are required to follow federal law.

Under federal law, marijuana is still illegal. Therefore, if you are found to be using marijuana on UC property you will still face disciplinary action.

You cannot smoke or consume marijuana in public. The penalty for this is a $100 infraction.

You cannot drive under the influence of marijuana and you can get a DUI if you are found to be impaired while driving.

It is illegal to consume marijuana in a moving vehicle or have an "open container' or marijuana. Violating these laws could result in a $250 fine.

If you are under the age of 21 and you are found to be in possession of marijuana will be fined $100.

Does that fact that Marijuana is now legal mean that it's safe to use?

There is still so much we don't know about marijuana and its long term effects. Ultimately, the decision whether to use marijuana is up to you, however, there are some possible side effects and health risks.

Marijuana can have significant impacts on the developing brain. Studies have shown that consistent marijuana use when you are younger can have lasting effects on your concentration, problem solving skills, and memory. You may think that you are safe from this since you're an adult, but it's been shown that our brains don't stop developing until we are well into our 20s.

Smoking marijuana can have negative effects on your lungs and can increase your risk of developing a cough or a lung infection.

Marijuana is known to cause anxiety in some people and an extremely high concentration of THC in your blood can cause delusions
